SPACE

SUPPORTIVE PARENTING FOR ANXIOUS CHILDHOOD EMOTIONS

Developed by Dr. Eli Lebowitz at the Yale Child Study Center, SPACE aims to treat children and adolescents with anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Caregivers who participate in SPACE will learn skills and tools to help their child overcome anxiety, OCD or related problems.

The treatment focuses on changes that parents can make to their own behavior rather than focusing on changing the child's behavior

Some of the main anxiety problems treated with SPACE include:

  • Separation anxiety
  • Social anxiety
  • Generalized anxiety
  • Fears and phobias
  • Panic disorder and Agoraphobia
  • Selective mutism
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at Isabel@houseofhopecounseling.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.

SPACE is a parent-based counseling program that focuses on working directly with caregivers, rather than the child, to help reduce childhood anxiety. In counseling, therapists guide parents through strategies to support their child’s emotional growth while managing anxiety-related behaviors at home.

Yes, it can. Sometimes the child may refuse counseling thus, caregivers often focus on their parenting that is directly influencing experienced anxiety in their children.

  •  Parents learn and practice new skills each week.
  • Therapists guide them in gradually reducing family accommodation.
  • Ongoing support helps parents handle challenges and build confidence.

During your first session I will ask the caregiver questions regarding your child's behavior, symptoms and concerns you may have. You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the counseling process.

  • It empowers parents as the primary agents of change in helping their child overcome anxiety.
  • It is non-confrontational and compassionate, reducing family stress.
  • It can be used alone or alongside child-focused therapies.
  • It is flexible for a variety of anxiety-related concerns, including worry, separation anxiety, and phobias.

  •  SPACE is usually delivered over 10 to 12 weekly sessions, providing parents with practical tools and support to help their anxious children build confidence and independence.
